What’s expected

I am late in the game with G.O.T but I have finally watched seasons 1 to 7 (no spoilers of 8 please, lol).

I love Arya Stark and Daenerys Targaryen as they are strong female leads and they break barriers of what is expected of them as a female in that time and that environment.

I am not about to write a review on Game of Thrones, but there was a message shared in Season 7 episode 7 by Arya Stark that really stayed with me.

She is telling a story about her brother Bran who is practicing his shooting with an arrow. He stops and leaves the courtyard, leaving his bow and 1 arrow behind.

Arya picks it up as there is no one around to stop her and starts shooting at the target. There is only 1 arrow so she has to go up and back several times to keep shooting. Finally she hits the bullseye.

She says ” I can’t remember if it was the 20th or 50th shot when I hit the bullseye, but when I did I heard applause. I turned to see father looking down at me from the top of the wall, smiling.

I knew what I was doing was against the rules, but he was smiling, so I knew it wasn’t wrong, the rules were wrong. I was doing what I was meant to be doing and he knew it.”

So as a girl she was meant to be a lady and sew and knit and wear dresses but she wanted to be a Knight.

I feel this is so relevant to society and what is expected from us. What is expected from us as a women, as a mum, as a wife. As a man, as a dad, as a son.

Men are meant to be bread winners and earn more than their partners. Women are meant to get married, have babies and look after the family home.

Women are not meant to want more and are made to feel guilty when they do. Men are not meant to cry or show emotion.

This only leads to suppressed feelings and resentment and ultimately unfulfilled lives.

Now I know this is changing and thank god for that! But we are still a way off.

So do what you love, express yourself, push boundaries and expectations!

And always remember, it’s not you that is wrong the rules are wrong!
