Have you ever told yourself that you are just not good at something? That it is not your thing?
Have you heard others say “oh he’s a natural” or “She was born to do that”.
Do you think that is true?
When I was at school there were the guys “made” for football and the amazing female tennis player and the amazing singers and dancers. To me and everyone else this creativity and ability just came to them. They were Naturals!
Most of those people do not play football or tennis now and they are not on the TV dancing or singing. Which is a damn shame.
Why do you think that is? Life just gets busy, or they got married and had kids instead?
No, no, it’s their fixed mindset.
When you take a knock back doing something you love it cuts deep. You are at your most vulnerable. And if you are always told you were a Natural then you stop trying. Because naturals don’t need to train or make effort right?
Therefore you lose the skill you have. I think the term use it or lose it can apply to this.
There is an element of belief in oneself and also the ability to hear NO 10,000 times before the final yes that keeps you in the long game. But what if we had never quit?
Michael Jordan got let go from his high school varsity team for not being tall enough. Michael god damn Jordan! No need for me to tell you the ending…
Michael Jordan had a growth mindset and discipline. The harder he worked the better he got. There is nothing he could do about his height, but he took control of the other aspects and skills required for the game.
For years I have told myself “I just can’t do maths” or “I am just no good at it”. That’s my fixed mindset at large. I just wish someone had told me when I was younger, you can do maths you just need to try harder, make more effort or find a different learning method. I just thought “nah, that’s me done, never mind” but it has always bothered me.
The good news is we can change a fixed mindset to a growth mindset! This may enable you to pick up where you left off 10 years ago or try something you have always wanted too!
